MAC STEENROD

Story

Son to a veteran special-forces pilot and children’s book store clerk, Mac is a Denver native who spent his youth getting lost in Colorado’s backcountry – climbing fourteeners, hunting and fishing with his family, tent-reading science fiction back-country, and carving up Rocky Mountain powder.  Playing with family after Sunday dinners since before he could see the table, Mac grew up following his (arguably irresponsible) father to pool halls after school to learn from “true professionals.”  His internships proving he wasn’t cut out to be a doctor, a lawyer, or a pool-shark, Mac learned early that he was best suited towards a career in business.

A proud Boston College alum, Mac worked up to three jobs at a time to self-finance his undergraduate education as well as his first international experience – studying at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology.   Out of BC, Mac joined the technology group of a New York-based investment banking firm.

Providing strategic and financial advisory to growing software, semiconductor, internet, and tech-enabled services companies, Mac worked with some of the most incredible mentors and executive teams across North America.  After a couple years, Mac moved to Baltimore to apprentice in principal investing with a top-decile growth equity firm specializing in business-to-business software and technology-enabled services.

Honing his investing acumen traveling across North America, Mac then moved to Philadelphia to pursue his MBA at Wharton. During school, Mac traveled to New York to continue to broaden his industry and geographic expertise, working for the Corridor Investments Team in Citigroup's emerging markets private equity fund.

Following grad school, Mac returned to Denver to establish the first satellite office for a higher education-focused VC fund.  Forced to choose between moving to New York City with the fund or co-founding a truly innovative health sciences education company in his hometown, Mac chose the latter to be close to family and the higher growth curve.

Mac left in late 2015 following the sale of the company to a European media conglomerate.  Since then, Mac has been fortunate to explore his passions, entrepreneurial interests, and build communities in highly innovative and emerging markets from his home base in Colorado.  Mac recharges by getting away from people in the great outdoors, training for his next adventure, and cheering for his Broncos in Mile High.
